This is my first attempt at a dough bowl, I would like to say traditional but its far from a traditional approach or design. I started out intending to make a traditional hand carved dough bowl but once I had cut a section from a large Spalted Beech log and split it with an axe and maul, all I could think about was the amount of lost timber. Spalted Beech is one of my favourite woods and a split log 46cm wide would normally make three to four good salad bowls or even a nested set once I take cores from each subsequent core, all will become clear. That’s not just a waste of timber its a loss of revenue too so instead of going at it with an adze strait away I’ve tried something different.
So below is the blank 40 seconds after I mounted it, then I decided to do the blog Post so I have stared to true up the base at this point the blank is 57cm long by 46cm wide and weighs about 45KG. I mounted it on a faceplate ring with six screws the ring then gives a very positive mount on to my chucks 100mm dovetail jaws.
Five minuets later and I’m starting to get it balanced up so i can turn the speed up on the lathe.
Another five minuets and its ready to re-mount on to a dovetailed recess cut in to the base of the bowl blank.
Here is the top face with the faceplate ring removed ready to be trued up.
Another five minuets and the top is trued up and two rings cut in to the top face to mark the cores I will remove, and a recess cut in the centre for re- mounting the cores.
Here you can see the core after its been knocked loose after the coring tools has done its work.
Now you can see the hollow left by the core. I still have some carving left to do to finish the inside of the bowl but now I have a timber core to make more products with.
Here the core is re-mounted ready to have the outside trued up and a recess put in the base for re-mounting and taking another core.
Now its turned around again for the next stage, I’ve stopped half way through the coring process to take this photo.
Here you can see the hooked tool after its done its job, now all I have to do is tap the core hard on one edge and it will fall out.
Here I’ve taped out the core.
Now the second core is re-mounted on the same recess and trued up, this time I cut a small foot to re-mount the blank for hollowing or I could choose to take a third smaller core, this time I didn’t as it was already getting dark and the cows were demanding attention.
Finally the three bowls ready for drying and re-turning or carving to final shape.
The largest one will end up looking like a traditional dough bowl after carving, updates will follow.
